Industrialist seeks urgent injunction, alleging channel’s sensationalised coverage of ED probes has caused grave and irreparable damage to his reputation and professional standing

Mumbai, March 30, 2026 — In a dramatic legal confrontation pitting one of India’s most prominent industrialists against one of its most controversial television anchors, Anil Ambani has moved the Bombay High Court with a defamation suit seeking an injunction against Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, claiming that the channel’s continuous coverage has “damaged” his reputation.

The case is expected to come up for hearing on April 1 before Justice Milind Jadhav.

The Allegations

In his suit, Ambani claimed that he is aggrieved by certain recent articles authored and published by the defendants and circulated over their news channels and social media platforms. The publications reportedly claim to cover regulatory proceedings initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to corporate entities including Reliance Communications Limited (RCOM), Reliance Home Finance Limited, and Reliance Commercial Finance Limited.

Ambani has clarified that he stopped being the Non-Executive Director of RCOM in November 2019 and was never a Director, Whole-time Director, Key Managerial Personnel, CEO, or Manager in any of the Reliance Group companies under scrutiny.

Despite this, the suit alleges that Republic TV and Goswami knowingly chose to “maliciously, falsely, and irresponsibly” impute a libellous personal connection between the ongoing corporate investigations and Ambani himself.

Sensationalised Coverage, Says Ambani

Ambani has accused the defendants of using sensational language and defamatory labels, claiming he has been portrayed as a “financial scam mastermind, cheat, money launderer, fraud.” He argued that these imputations have created a “false perception of guilt” and exposed him to public hatred, ridicule, and contempt, causing “grave and irreparable injury” to his reputation, dignity, and professional standing.

Relief Sought

In the plea, a demand has been made for an interim injunction against ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd, Arnab Goswami, and other unidentified parties, seeking to restrain them from airing or publishing the allegedly defamatory content.

The suit further asserts that Republic TV and Arnab Goswami acted with malice and negligence, resulting in serious loss and injury to Ambani, and that the legal action aims to provide redress for both monetary and reputational damages.

What Happens Next

On April 1, the Bombay High Court will consider the injunction plea. Possible paths include an ad-interim restraint on specified content, issuing notice and scheduling a detailed hearing, or setting disclosure and filing timelines. Courts typically weigh a prima facie case, balance of convenience, and risk of irreparable harm.

The case is being closely watched by legal and media circles alike, as its outcome could have significant implications for editorial standards, media liability, and press freedom in India.

Republic TV and Arnab Goswami are yet to issue a public response to the suit.
