Perpetrators locked relatives in room, filmed assault, circulated video; one arrested amid ongoing minority violence

Dhaka, January 5, 2026 – In a horrifying incident highlighting escalating attacks on minorities, a 44-year-old Hindu widow was allegedly gang-raped by local men in Bangladesh’s Jhenaidah district, who then tied her to a tree, forcibly cut her hair, beat her, and recorded the entire ordeal on video.

The assault occurred on Saturday evening in the Kaliaganj area when two male relatives were visiting the victim, who lives with her 10-year-old son. The accused – identified as Shahin, Hasan (45), and associates – forcibly entered her home, locked the relatives in one room, and raped her in another.

The motive appears linked to a land dispute: the woman had purchased a house and land from Shahin’s brother two years ago, after which she faced repeated harassment and extortion demands.

After the rape, the perpetrators dragged the victim and her relatives outside, tied them to a tree, falsely accused them of “immoral activities,” cut her hair as humiliation, and filmed the acts before circulating the video.

Locals found the woman in critical condition Saturday night and rushed her to Kaliaganj hospital. She filed a police complaint on Monday, leading to the arrest of one accused, Hasan. Raids are underway for the others.

Police Officer-in-Charge Jelal Hussain confirmed the case, attributing the delay in reporting to her medical treatment, and vowed strict action.

This incident unfolds amid a wave of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, with recent reports of murders, mob attacks, and arson in various districts.
