Gurugram, September 5, 2025 – Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal announced India’s rapid strides toward becoming the global leader in metro service availability, as he and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini performed the Bhoomi Pujan for a 28.5 km metro corridor in Gurugram. The Rs 5,452 crore project, connecting Millennium City Centre to Cyber City via Dwarka Expressway with 27 elevated stations, promises to bridge old and new Gurugram, reduce traffic congestion, and spur economic growth.

Speaking at Gurugram University’s auditorium, Manohar Lal highlighted the expansion of India’s metro network from 248 km across five cities in 2014 to 1,066 km in 24 cities today, with 970 km under construction. “Once completed, India will be number one globally in metro service availability,” he said, pledging the Urban Ministry’s commitment to timely approvals for metro projects nationwide. He also announced 10,000 concessional-rate buses across India, with 450 for Haryana, including 100 for Gurugram, alongside app-based last-mile connectivity solutions linked to metro cards for seamless travel.

Chief Minister Saini termed the event a “historic day,” emphasizing that the metro, set for completion in four years, will redefine Gurugram’s identity by easing commutes, cutting pollution, and creating jobs. Key stations include Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar, Palam Vihar, and the Railway Station, with a 1.85 km spur to Dwarka Expressway enhancing NCR connectivity. Future extensions to Rezangla Chowk, Dwarka Sector-21, Sector-56 to Pachgaon, and routes to Delhi, Karnal, Neemrana, and Noida via Faridabad were also outlined, signaling ambitious regional integration.

Saini underscored Gurugram’s economic prowess, noting its third-ranked per capita income after Chandigarh and Mumbai, and its role as a hub for over 250 Fortune 500 companies, 19 unicorns, and major IT and automobile firms. “This metro is not just transport; it’s a symbol of progress,” he said, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for Haryana’s development. The project, executed by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) and Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation, is expected to see 5.4 lakh daily riders by 2026, rising to 10.7 lakh by 2051.

Haryana Industries Minister Rao Narbir Singh hailed the project as a catalyst for socio-economic growth, predicting reduced pollution, enhanced industrial activity, and increased investments. Gurugram MLA Mukesh Sharma called it a proud moment, noting the corridor’s role in easing daily commutes. Manohar Lal also administered a cleanliness pledge, vowing to make Gurugram the nation’s cleanest city, aligning with Modi’s vision. The event, attended by GMDA Chairman D.S. Dhesi and GMRL CEO Chandshekhar Khare, marked a significant step in transforming Gurugram into a global urban hub.
