Eight dead, over 20 injured as massive car blast rocks Delhi’s Red Fort area; terror angle not ruled out amid high alert

New Delhi, November 10, 2025 – A powerful explosion ripped through a moving car near Gate No. 1 of Lal Qila (Red Fort) Metro Station in the heart of Old Delhi on Monday evening, killing at least eight people and injuring over 20 others in a crowded tourist area.

The blast, reported around 6:55 PM, occurred in a slow-moving Swift Dzire vehicle that suddenly stopped at a traffic signal, according to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. The intensity shattered nearby streetlights, flung vehicles up to 150 meters, and ignited fires in at least three to six adjacent cars and autorickshaws. Eyewitnesses described chaos, with one shopkeeper telling reporters: “I never heard such a loud explosion in my life. It felt like we were all going to die.”

Seven fire tenders and 15 ambulances rushed to the scene, dousing the flames by 7:29 PM. Injured victims were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, where eight were declared dead on arrival. The area, near the historic Red Fort and bustling Chandni Chowk, was immediately cordoned off.

Delhi Police Special Cell, National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and forensic teams are investigating. While initial suspicions include a CNG cylinder or battery malfunction, authorities have not ruled out foul play, especially after a terror module bust in nearby Faridabad recovered 2,900 kg of explosives just hours earlier. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Delhi Police Commissioner, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation.

A high alert has been declared in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, with increased security at religious sites, borders, and vital installations. Metro services remain normal, but Gates 1 and 4 at Lal Qila station are restricted.

Leaders across parties expressed shock. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee called it “tragic,” while AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal demanded a probe into any “larger conspiracy.”

Investigation ongoing; more details awaited.
