Middle East On The Brink: Iran Rejects Pakistan’s Mediation, Trump Threatens To Destroy Energy Sites As War Escalates

From missile strikes on Israel to downed drones over UAE, a university bombed in Tehran to an Indian national killed in Kuwait — the Iran conflict is spiralling into a full-scale regional war with no ceasefire in sight

New Delhi / International Desk, March 30, 2026 — The Middle East edged closer to catastrophic escalation on Monday as Iran flatly rejected Pakistan’s attempts to broker peace talks with the United States, while American President Donald Trump issued his most direct threat yet — warning that Iran’s power plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and desalination facilities would be “completely destroyed” if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately reopened and a deal is not reached.

The conflict, which has drawn in multiple nations across the region and beyond, saw a rapid series of developments through the day, painting a grim picture of a war that shows no signs of abating.

Iran Shuts Door On Pakistan’s Peace Bid

In a significant diplomatic setback, Iran made clear it wants no part of Pakistan’s mediation efforts. According to a statement from the Iranian Consulate in Mumbai, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that no direct talks with the United States are currently underway, and accused Washington of placing unnecessary conditions through third-party nations. Iran categorically stated that Pakistan’s initiative is Islamabad’s own effort and does not involve Tehran in any capacity.

Pakistan had earlier offered to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran to reduce tensions, but Iran’s rejection has left that initiative effectively dead in the water. Trump, for his part, said the door to talks remains open — but added that military action would be intensified if a swift agreement is not reached.

Trump’s Ultimatum: Open Hormuz Or Face Destruction

In a fiery social media post, President Trump warned that if Iran does not open the Strait of Hormuz immediately, the United States will strike its energy infrastructure — including power plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and desalination plants. Trump claimed that America is already in dialogue with what he described as a “new and smarter” leadership within Iran, and that progress is being made — but that patience is running thin.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the administration’s resolve, saying America’s primary focus remains on achieving its military targets and that it is making steady progress. Rubio also called on Iran to halt its drone and missile production, noting that recent Iranian strikes had targeted Gulf nations including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

3,500 US Marines Land In Middle East

Adding muscle to the rhetoric, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit comprising 3,500 American soldiers has arrived in the Middle East, accompanied by transport and combat aircraft. Plans are reportedly in place to deploy thousands more troops, tanks, warships, and fighter jets. Trump has also spoken openly about the possibility of seizing Iran’s Kharg Island.

Iran’s English-language newspaper Tehran Times responded with a stark front-page warning: “Welcome to Hell,” the paper declared, threatening that any American soldiers who set foot on Iranian soil would return “in coffins.”

Strikes, Drones And Missiles: A Day Of Destruction

The day saw relentless military activity across the region. Israel carried out an airstrike on a university in Tehran, with the Israeli military claiming the institution was being used as a military compound — though no evidence was made public and Iran has not yet responded officially.

Earlier, Iran launched a missile strike on the Ramat Hovav chemical plant in southern Israel. Israel also struck a military base near the Caspian Sea in northern Iran, approximately 1,600 kilometres from Israeli territory, targeting air defence systems that posed a threat to its fighter jets. Israeli airstrikes were also reported in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, with smoke visible rising from the area on Monday morning.

UAE reported intercepting 27 Iranian drones and 11 ballistic missiles on Monday alone. Since the war began, the UAE has now neutralised a total of 1,941 drones, 425 ballistic missiles, and 15 cruise missiles.

Indian National Killed In Kuwait Attack

In a development directly affecting India, one Indian national was killed in an attack on a power and water plant in Kuwait. A fire broke out at the facility following the strike. Separately, an aircraft belonging to Iran’s Mahan Airlines, which was parked at Mashhad Airport and was scheduled to fly to New Delhi to collect medicines and essential relief supplies, was damaged in an American strike — halting the humanitarian mission.

The Indian government confirmed that 18 Indian ships carrying 485 crew members are currently present in the Persian Gulf, and all are safe. Two Indian LPG carriers — BW TYR and BW ELM — have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are heading towards India. Eight Indian sailors were also safely repatriated in the last 24 hours.

Global Response Grows

Spain announced it is closing its airspace to American military aircraft involved in the war against Iran, and has also banned the use of its military bases for such operations — a notable rupture within the Western alliance.

The European Union extended its human rights sanctions against Iran by one year, valid until April 13, 2027. The sanctions currently cover 262 individuals and 53 entities, barring them from travelling to EU nations and freezing their assets.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi made a personal appeal to Trump at an international energy conference in Cairo, urging him to help end the war. “On behalf of humanity and those who seek peace, I appeal to you — please help stop this war. You are capable of doing so,” Sisi said.

Meanwhile, Iraq resumed crude oil supplies to Turkey through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline, with oil now flowing to the Ceyhan port — a rare piece of stable news amid the chaos.

Two suspicious projectiles also landed near a vessel off Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia, though all persons aboard were reported safe. Investigations are underway.
