PSL 2026 to Be Played Behind Closed Doors as Pakistan Slashes Costs Amid Iran War Oil Crisis

Opening ceremony scrapped, tournament cut from six cities to just Lahore and Karachi as PCB chief cites government advice to limit public movement — with all ticket refunds promised within 72 hours

Pakistan Super League 2026 will be played in empty stadiums without spectators, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed, as the country grapples with a deepening economic crisis triggered by soaring oil prices linked to the ongoing Iran-Israel war.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the sweeping changes following consultations with the Prime Minister and security agencies, saying the government had advised limiting large public gatherings given the prevailing economic conditions. The decision means the tournament’s opening ceremony, scheduled ahead of the March 26 start, has also been cancelled.

“The government advised keeping public movement limited given the current economic situation,” Naqvi said, adding that bringing thousands of spectators into stadiums under these circumstances was deemed inappropriate.

From Six Cities to Two

In a further cost-cutting move, all PSL 11 matches — originally planned across six cities — will now be held exclusively in Lahore and Karachi. Fixtures scheduled for Faisalabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and other venues have been cancelled. Naqvi offered a public apology to fans in Peshawar, promising the city would host matches in a future edition.

The Iran conflict has sent crude oil prices doubling across Asia, placing severe strain on Pakistan’s already stretched public finances. The government has opted not to pass the full increase on to consumers, meaning the difference is being absorbed by the national treasury — prompting a broader austerity push of which the PSL restrictions appear to be a direct consequence.

PCB to Compensate Franchises, Fans Get Refunds

Naqvi acknowledged that playing without crowds would deal a significant financial blow to franchises, for whom gate receipts form a meaningful revenue stream. The PCB has committed to compensating franchises for losses arising from the fan ban. All previously purchased tickets will be refunded within 72 hours, and Naqvi issued a personal apology to fans for the disruption.

Franchises and sponsors have backed the decision to proceed with the tournament despite the restrictions, Naqvi said, adding that player arrival processes are already underway and that security arrangements meet international standards.

Legal Action Threatened Against Players Who Jumped to IPL

In a separate development, Naqvi issued a sharp warning to foreign players who withdrew from PSL at the last minute to participate in IPL 2026. Naming Dasun Shanaka and Blessing Muzarabani among those who switched leagues, the PCB chief said legal proceedings are being prepared against two or three players. The move signals a hardening of the PCB’s stance on contract discipline as it seeks to protect the league’s commercial credibility.

The Tournament at a Glance

PSL Season 11 opens on March 26 in Lahore with a match between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen. The edition features a strong contingent of overseas players, with Australian cricketers particularly well represented.

In the tournament’s history since 2016, Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the most successful sides with three titles each. Islamabad won in 2016, 2018, and 2024, while Lahore claimed back-to-back-to-back titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Multan Sultans, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings, and Peshawar Zalmi have each lifted the trophy once.
