Chandigarh, September 5, 2025 – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Friday evening due to high fever, prompting heightened security around the facility. The hospital has yet to release an official medical bulletin, but a team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition. The admission follows the cancellation of a crucial cabinet meeting scheduled for Friday to address the state’s ongoing flood crisis, which Mann had been actively overseeing through visits to affected areas.

Mann’s health deteriorated after two days of illness, which had already forced him to cancel a planned visit to flood-hit regions with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday. Kejriwal, speaking in Sultanpur Lodhi, revealed that Mann was on a drip due to his worsening condition, leading to the postponement of his engagements, including a trip to Gurdaspur. Mann had been receiving treatment at his official residence in Chandigarh before his condition necessitated hospitalisation.

This is not Mann’s first health scare. In September 2024, he was admitted to the same hospital after routine tests revealed inflammation in a pulmonary artery, causing increased pressure on his heart and fluctuating blood pressure. Diagnosed with leptospirosis, a bacterial infection linked to rainwater exposure, he was treated with antibiotics and discharged on September 29, 2024. His recent flood relief tours, involving extensive travel to waterlogged areas, may have contributed to his current illness, raising concerns about recurring health issues.

Mann, 51, has been at the forefront of Punjab’s flood response, with the state grappling with severe flooding across all 23 districts, declared disaster-affected. His tours included emotional interactions with affected families, notably in Ferozepur, where he was seen breaking down while addressing their losses. The state government has deployed the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and volunteers, with over 1,312 villages impacted and schools closed until September 7.

A former comedian turned politician, Mann rose from Sangrur’s SUS College, where he earned a BCom degree, to become a prominent AAP leader. After an unsuccessful electoral debut in 2012 with the Punjab People’s Party, he won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and 2019 before leading AAP to a landslide victory in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, becoming Chief Minister. His personal life also drew attention when he married Dr. Gurpreet Kaur in 2022, shortly after assuming office.

As Mann’s health remains under observation, the state administration continues its flood relief efforts, with officials assuring that operations remain unaffected. The postponement of the cabinet meeting, intended to review rescue and rehabilitation measures, underscores the urgency of Mann’s recovery to steer Punjab through its ongoing crisis.
