Kashmiri prisoner Arun Chaudhary allegedly attacked 20-year-old with sharp weapon; incident raises questions about prison security

A 20-year-old terror accused lodged in Faridabad’s Neemla district jail was killed late Sunday night after being attacked by a fellow inmate, police confirmed on Monday. The victim, identified as Abdul Rahman, was a resident of Milkipur in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad district.

According to police spokesperson Yashpal Singh, the incident occurred during a confrontation between Rahman and another prisoner, Arun Chaudhary, a Kashmiri youth who had been transferred to the facility from Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities report that Chaudhary attacked Rahman on the head with a sharp-edged weapon, inflicting fatal injuries. Rahman died on the spot inside the jail premises.

Rahman had been in custody since June 2025 following his arrest on March 2, 2025, near Pali village in a joint operation conducted by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Haryana Special Task Force (STF). At the time of his arrest, two hand grenades were recovered from his possession, which were later defused by authorities.

An FIR was registered against Rahman at Dabua Police Station in Faridabad. Officials had stated during his arrest that he was suspected of involvement in a conspiracy to carry out an explosion in Ayodhya and allegedly had links with Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, according to an STF official. Two mobile phones containing incriminating videos were also seized from him. Sources indicated that he had shared videos with a terror outfit and may have been supported by a sleeper cell.

Arun Chaudhary, who was also arrested for alleged involvement in terrorist activities and transferred to Neemka Jail in October 2024, has been taken into custody for further questioning in connection with the murder.

Following the attack, jail authorities were immediately alerted, and Rahman was rushed for medical attention, but doctors declared him dead. Security inside the jail has been tightened, with senior officials visiting the premises to assess the situation.

A case has been registered in connection with the murder. Police are investigating the motive behind the killing and examining whether any security lapses allowed the attack to take place. It remains unclear whether the murder was linked to Rahman’s alleged terrorist activities or stemmed from a personal rivalry between the two inmates.

The incident has raised serious concerns about security arrangements at the correctional facility.
