Antisemitic terrorist incident shocks Australia on first night of Jewish festival; former England cricketer Michael Vaughan among those caught in chaos

Sydney, December 14, 2025 – In a devastating terrorist attack, at least 12 people were killed and 29 others injured when two gunmen opened fire on crowds gathered at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday evening.

The attack, declared a terrorist incident by New South Wales Police, targeted the “Chanukah by the Sea” event organised by Chabad of Bondi, marking the first night of the Jewish Festival of Lights. Around 1,000 people, including families and children, were attending the joyful seaside gathering near the Bondi Pavilion and Archer Park when gunfire erupted around 6:45 pm local time.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the assault as “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community,” calling it a “cowardly act of terrifying violence.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labelled it “an act of evil antisemitism” and a “devastating terrorist incident,” emphasising that it struck during what should have been a day of celebration and faith.

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that one gunman was killed at the scene, while a second was critically injured and taken into custody. Authorities are investigating the possible involvement of a third attacker. A vehicle on nearby Campbell Parade was found containing several improvised explosive devices, which were later neutralised by bomb disposal units.

Dramatic eyewitness videos captured the horror: two men in black clothing firing from an elevated pedestrian bridge, with dozens of shots ringing out over approximately 10 minutes. Hundreds fled in panic across the sand, seeking shelter in nearby streets, parks, and businesses. In one heroic moment caught on camera, a bystander tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen, wresting the rifle away and pointing it back at the attacker.

Among those affected was former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, who was in Sydney commentating on the Ashes series. Vaughan recounted being locked inside a nearby restaurant during the chaos, describing the experience as “scary.” He later posted on X: “Being locked in a restaurant in Bondi was scary.. Now home safe .. but thanks so much to the emergency services and the guy who confronted the terrorist .. thoughts with all who have been affected.”

Casualties included the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi, with injured victims – including two police officers – rushed to hospitals across Sydney. Witnesses described scenes of blood on the ground, people shielding children, and bystanders using surfboards to carry the wounded to safety.

A senior law enforcement source identified one of the gunmen as Naveed Akram from Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west, though full details on motives and identities are still emerging. ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess noted one offender was known to authorities but not considered an immediate threat.

The attack has drawn global condemnation. Israeli officials expressed horror, linking it to rising antisemitism in Australia since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. World leaders, including from the US, UK, and UN, offered condolences and solidarity.

This is the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, reviving painful memories in a nation with strict gun laws. Jewish community leaders called it their “worst fear becoming reality,” amid heightened concerns over antisemitic incidents in recent years.

As investigations continue under counter-terrorism command, authorities urge calm while vowing a thorough probe. Sydney’s Jewish community has been advised to exercise caution, with increased security at religious sites nationwide.

The incident has united Australians in grief, with tributes pouring in for the victims and praise for the bravery of first responders and civilians who risked their lives to help others.
