Massive revision of electoral rolls sees more than 2 crore names removed from Uttar Pradesh’s voter list; officials urge citizens to verify their registration online

LUCKNOW, April 10, 2026 — Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a significant drop in its total registered voter count, with the electoral roll shrinking from 15.44 crore to 13.39 crore — a reduction of over 2 crore voters. The development has drawn widespread attention across the state, prompting election authorities to urge all residents to verify whether their names remain on the updated voter list.

The revised figures represent one of the largest reductions in UP’s voter roll in recent memory, raising questions about the scale and process of the revision exercise carried out by the Election Commission of India.

Why Has the Voter Count Dropped?

Electoral roll revisions are carried out periodically to remove duplicate entries, deceased voters, and those who have permanently migrated to other constituencies. Authorities maintain that the exercise is essential to ensure a clean and accurate database ahead of elections. However, a drop of more than 2 crore names has prompted concern among political parties and civil society groups, who are calling for transparency in the deletion process.

How to Check Your Name on the Voter List

Election authorities have advised all UP residents to immediately verify their voter registration status through the following steps:

Online via National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) Visit www.nvsp.in → Click on ‘Search Your Name in Electoral Roll’ → Enter your details such as name, age, and district → Submit to check your status

Via Voter Helpline Call the national voter helpline number 1950 to check your registration status

Through the Voter Helpline App Download the Voter Helpline App available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store → Log in and search your name using EPIC number or personal details

At Your Local BLO Office Visit your nearest Booth Level Officer (BLO) or Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for offline verification and assistance

What to Do If Your Name Is Missing?

If your name does not appear on the voter list, you can apply for fresh registration using Form 6 on the NVSP portal or at your nearest ERO office. Residents are advised to keep their Aadhaar card, address proof, and a passport-size photograph ready when applying.

Political Reactions

The sharp drop in voter numbers is expected to trigger political controversy in Uttar Pradesh, a state that sends the highest number of MPs to Parliament and is considered a crucial battleground in any national or state election. Opposition parties are likely to demand a full audit of the revision process to ensure no genuine voters have been wrongly removed from the rolls.

Election officials have so far maintained that the revision was carried out strictly in accordance with established procedures and that any aggrieved voter can apply for re-inclusion within the stipulated time period.

Citizens are strongly urged not to wait and to check their voter registration status at the earliest to avoid being disenfranchised.
