Court directs Film Writers Association to investigate plagiarism claims against iconic 1952 Tamil film written by DMK founder Karunanidhi

Chennai – The Madras High Court has issued a notice regarding a petition alleging that the story of the classic Tamil film Parasakthi (1952) was plagiarized, directing the Film Writers Association to submit a detailed report on the matter.

The petition claims that the screenplay and storyline of Parasakthi, one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated films, was stolen from an original work. The 1952 movie, which marked the debut of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan and was written by M. Karunanidhi, founder of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, is considered a landmark in Tamil cinema history.

The court has asked the Film Writers Association to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and present their findings. The association has been tasked with examining the claims of plagiarism and determining whether the original complainant’s story bears substantial similarity to the film’s narrative.

Parasakthi is renowned for its powerful social commentary and dialogues that challenged prevailing social norms of the time. The film’s progressive themes and Karunanidhi’s sharp writing established him as a prominent screenwriter before his entry into politics. The movie also launched the career of Sivaji Ganesan, who went on to become one of Tamil cinema’s greatest actors.

The petition has stirred considerable interest given the film’s iconic status in Tamil cinema and its historical significance. Legal experts note that copyright claims involving works from over seven decades ago present unique challenges regarding documentation and evidence.

The matter is expected to be heard again after the Film Writers Association submits its report to the court. Further proceedings will depend on the findings of the association’s investigation into the plagiarism allegations.
