Police in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district have arrested six people, including a college professor identified as the mastermind, in connection with the leak of an examination paper belonging to Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV). Two more accused remain at large.

HOW THE PAPER WAS LEAKED

According to police, the accused professor, Yogesh Sonkesariya, who has taught at Bharti Agriculture College in Durg since 2019, gained access to sealed examination papers through his college’s routine practice of submitting answer sheets and collecting question papers for upcoming exams at Raipur’s Krishi Mahavidyalaya in Jora.

On August 17, Sonkesariya visited the college to submit answer sheets and, during the visit, collected question papers for forthcoming exams, including the entomology paper scheduled for August 20. He took the sealed envelope containing the paper home.

Police said Sonkesariya then pierced a small hole in the sealed envelope with a needle and inserted an endoscopy camera through the opening to scan the questions without breaking the seal. He is alleged to have transcribed the content by hand and sold it to students of his own college for ₹11,000 each.

PAPERS FOR TWO EXAMS AFFECTED

The leaked material related to two examinations conducted by IGKV across its network of 28 affiliated agriculture colleges — the B.Sc. Agriculture first-year Plant Pathology paper, held on August 7, and the second-year, second-semester Entomology paper, scheduled for August 20. Following the leak, the university postponed the affected examination.

Police said the entomology paper began circulating on WhatsApp roughly two hours before the exam was due to start, with images and questions reaching students ahead of time, apparently forwarded from another source.

CASE CRACKED WITHIN 36 HOURS

After the paper went viral on WhatsApp, university authorities alerted police, who launched a technical investigation. Officers first detained Durg resident Anuj Minj for questioning, which led investigating teams to fan out across Kabirdham, Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur districts. After roughly 36 hours of sustained investigation, police said they had cracked the case, tracing its roots to a private college in Durg.

SEIZURES AND ARRESTS

Police recovered ₹11,000 in cash, six mobile phones, a video recording device, cables, a mobile connector, needles, an awl, notebooks and adhesive from the accused. Besides Sonkesariya, the remaining five people arrested are students who allegedly purchased the leaked paper. Two more accused are still evading arrest, and police teams are continuing efforts to trace them. Investigators are also questioning those in custody to determine whether others were involved in the racket.
