Mumbai, India | April 13, 2026

India lost one of its most celebrated musical voices on Sunday as iconic Bollywood playback singer Asha Bhosle breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She was 92. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news, while Dr. Pratit Samdani of the hospital stated that she had multiple medical complications and passed away due to multi-organ failure.

Bhosle had been hospitalised on Saturday evening after her health deteriorated. Her final rites will be held on Monday, April 14, with a public viewing at her Lower Parel residence from 11 AM to 3 PM, followed by cremation at Shivaji Park at 4 PM. The Maharashtra government has announced she will be accorded full state honours.

A Life Defined by Music

Born into a family of musicians as the daughter of theatre actor and classical singer Dinanath Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle began singing at the age of nine to support her family after losing her father. The younger sister of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, she carved her own identity through decades of unmatched versatility — spanning classical, cabaret, ghazal, and pop.

Her career spanned over seven decades, producing timeless hits such as Dam Maro Dam, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, and Chura Liya Hai Tumne. She recorded over 12,000 songs in 14 languages, collaborated with composers including O.P. Nayyar, R.D. Burman, Khayyam, and Bappi Lahiri, and sang over 600 duets with Kishore Kumar alone. She and sister Lata Mangeshkar performed over 50 songs together.

Tributes Pour In

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called her “a remarkable and inspirational singer who ruled millions of hearts across generations,” noting that Bhosle had sung many Bengali songs and was immensely popular in Bengal. She had been awarded the state’s highest civilian honour, the Bang Vibhushan, in 2018.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Ashish Shelar said the entire country mourns the end of an era, adding that her music brought joy not just to India but to the entire world.

Asha Bhosle is survived by her children Hemant, Varsha, and Anand.
