Punjab’s Daughters Rewrite the Rules: Girls Sweep 19 of Top 20 Spots in Class 8 Board Results

From a brick kiln worker’s daughter to a government school teacher’s child — ordinary families produce extraordinary toppers as Punjab’s education revolution bears fruit

Punjab’s much-celebrated ‘Sikhya Kranti’ — or Education Revolution — produced its most striking result yet on Sunday, as girls dominated the Punjab School Education Board’s Class 8 merit list by claiming 19 of the top 20 positions, with just one boy making the cut at rank 20.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann personally honoured the toppers at his Chandigarh residence, awarding cash prizes of ₹50,000 each to the top three achievers and announcing that all top 20 students will receive direct admission to Punjab’s prestigious Schools of Eminence — without having to sit any entrance examination.

The results carried a powerful human story. Tamanna, who studied at Saraswati Senior Secondary School in Jaito, Faridkot, achieved a perfect score of 600 out of 600 — and is the daughter of a munim, an accounts clerk, working at a brick kiln. Second place went to Japneet Kaur from Government Middle School, Arkawas in Sangrur, with 598 marks, daughter of a tiles shop owner. Third place was claimed by Jashandeep Kaur of Sant Mohan Das Memorial Senior Secondary School in Kot Sukhia, Faridkot, also with 598 marks, whose father is a government primary school teacher. All three are also athletes competing at state and national levels.

A total of 2.62 lakh students appeared in this year’s Class 8 examinations across Punjab, making the achievement of these young women all the more remarkable.

Speaking at the event, CM Mann said the results were a direct reflection of what sustained investment in public education could achieve. “Girls have once again proven that they are second to none in any field,” he declared, visibly moved by the students’ stories and their quiet self-assurance. He urged the toppers to remain humble, work hard, and choose their role models wisely — calling them “the leaders of tomorrow.”

The Chief Minister was equally emphatic that the credit must be shared. “Along with the hard work of the students, the contribution of parents and teachers who guided them is equally commendable,” he said, calling it a historic day for Punjab’s education system.

The announcement of direct Schools of Eminence admission for all top 20 students underlines the government’s stated approach of backing merit with opportunity — ensuring that a child’s economic background does not limit their access to quality secondary education.

Punjab School Education Board Chairman Dr. Amarpal Singh, Secretary School Education Sonali Giri, and other senior officials were present at the ceremony.

For a state that has invested heavily in overhauling its government school infrastructure in recent years, Sunday’s results offered both validation and momentum — proof, as CM Mann put it, that Punjab is now “a role model across the country” in education.
