Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s breathtaking 97 off 29 balls in the IPL Eliminator leaves a record in tatters and a nation gasping — even in defeat of the milestone, the 15-year-old is rewriting cricket’s rule book

Rajasthan Royals produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs in the IPL 2026 Eliminator at the PCA New Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, posting a massive 243/8 before restricting SRH to 196 in 19.2 overs. At the heart of it all was an adolescent from Bihar who continues to make the impossible feel routine.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi — just 15 years old — came within a single shot of breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the fastest IPL century (30 balls), only to top-edge an attempted uppercut to deep third and fall for 97 off 29 balls. It was the shot that ended a masterclass, but not before the record books had been shredded.

Suryavanshi’s innings contained 12 sixes and, in the process, he surpassed Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season — a landmark that felt near-unassailable just weeks ago. His total of 61 sixes in the season obliterated Gayle’s previous benchmark of 59, underlining the historic scale of his breakout campaign.

The left-handed opener completely dominated the SRH attack — including Pat Cummins, Praful Hinge, and Eshan Malinga — during a brutal powerplay display that helped Rajasthan race past 150 runs in only 11.3 overs. Dhruv Jurel then provided valuable support with a quickfire 50 off 21 balls, before Jofra Archer took three wickets to seal RR’s place in Qualifier 2.

A Season for the Ages

The Eliminator knock was merely the crown jewel of what ESPNcricinfo has called one of the most extraordinary seasons not just in cricket, but in all of sport.

Across 15 matches in IPL 2026, Suryavanshi has accumulated 680 runs at an average of 41.64 and a strike rate of 242.86, with a season-best of 103. He has struck 55 fours and 65 sixes in the tournament alone.

Before IPL 2026, no batter had ever scored 550 runs or more in a T20 season at a strike rate exceeding 200. Suryavanshi became the first — and his strike rate of 232.27 is nearly 13% better than any other batter with 500-plus runs in a T20 tournament.

The defining feature of his season has been the sheer volume of sixes. He struck 53 maximums in the league stage alone, and his league-phase tally of 583 runs at a strike rate of 232.27 made him RR’s highest scorer and a central figure in their playoff qualification.

In a league fixture against SRH in Jaipur, Suryavanshi reached his century in 36 balls — the fastest hundred of the 2026 season and the third-fastest in IPL history. He also rewrote the powerplay record books, scoring 426 of his runs in the first six overs, overtaking Travis Head’s 2024 benchmark.

Of his 53-plus sixes, 20 came in the first ten balls of his innings, and eleven within the first five balls. He has faced 44 bowlers in IPL 2026 and hit 31 of them for six.

The Bigger Picture

Sachin Tendulkar described the Eliminator innings as spectacular, and Rajasthan Royals now advance to Qualifier 2 to face Gujarat Titans, with a place in the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at stake.

Overall across both his IPL seasons, Suryavanshi now has 932 runs from 22 innings at a career average of 39.76 and a strike rate of 231.84. He debuted at 14 years and 23 days — the youngest player in IPL history — and has since become the youngest centurion and the holder of the most sixes in a single IPL season.

Three runs short of one record. One season beyond all imagination.
