Heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak havoc across large parts of India on Sunday, with Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar reporting flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage.

MADHYA PRADESH: NEWLY BUILT ROAD WASHED AWAY

In Sidhi, a major stretch of a road constructed just six months ago at a cost of ₹104 crore was washed away in Saturday’s heavy rain. In Narsinghpur, the Retghat bridge went underwater. In Satna, three people, including one on a motorcycle, were swept into a drain — two were rescued, while one remains missing. In Panna, a dumper truck was swept away by a swollen river.

UTTAR PRADESH: 19 DISTRICTS UNDER FLOOD-LIKE CONDITIONS

Rising river levels have pushed 19 districts of Uttar Pradesh into flood-like conditions, with crops submerged in 92 villages and 26 villages cut off from the mainland. Relief material is being ferried to affected residents by boats and motorboats. In Prayagraj, rising Ganga-Yamuna water levels have submerged ghats and the riverfront, forcing last rites to be performed on roads after the steps of Daraganj Ghat went underwater, while floodwaters have reached the steps of the Bade Hanuman Mandir.

In Varanasi, all 84 ghats are now submerged. Boats now ply where shops once stood at Assi Ghat, and the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is being conducted from a rooftop. Water from the Varuna river has entered residential colonies. In Kanpur, both the Ganga and the Pandu river are in spate, leaving homes in low-lying areas under four to six feet of water.

UTTARAKHAND: LANDSLIDE SHUTS GANGOTRI HIGHWAY

Continuous rain triggered a landslide in Uttarkashi on Saturday, blocking the Gangotri highway under debris, while rainwater entered homes in the Joshiyada area. A total of 80 roads remain closed across the state, including 15 in Nainital and 13 each in Chamoli and Pithoragarh.

OTHER STATES ON ALERT

In Delhi, rain continued in several areas through Sunday morning, and a 15-year-old boy was swept into an open drain in Jasola, prompting an NDRF rescue operation. In Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, the administration issued an alert after heavy rain and lightning, advising residents in hilly areas and near rivers and streams to stay indoors unless necessary. In Dehradun, the swollen Tamsa river caused flooding at the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. Bihar’s meteorological department has issued a rain alert for 25 districts, warning of strong winds.
